Abstract

Condition of the soil in the field greatly affects the bearing capacity of the soil against the load on the structure above it. Very soft clay to soft clay is one type of soil with low bearing capacity, so it is necessary to improve its characteristics. Soil improvement can be done is by chemical stabilization or mixing the clay material with other additives. Palm shell charcoal powder was used as a stabilizing agent for clay soil in this study which reviewed its effect on the value of unconfined compressive strength and undrained shear strength. The results of the research showed that the addition of palm shell charcoal powder affected the characteristics of the clay soil. Along with the addition of palm shell charcoal powder, the value of unconfined compressive strength and undrained shear strength increased. The largest value of unconfined compressive strength and undrained shear strength was found in the addition of 15% palm shell charcoal powder from the dry weight of the clay soil. The value of unconfined compressive strength and undrained shear strength increased by about 60% from the condition of clay soil without the addition of palm shell charcoal powder, namely 2.63 kg/cm2 and 1.32 kg/cm2.
