Abstract

A direct strike on the phase wire can cause a traveling wave which will also cause damage to the insulator, these events are called Sheilding Failures. These disturbances due to lightning will be more common in tropical areas which have high intensity of lightning strikes. Improvement of the protection system can minimize the damage caused by this direct strike. To protect overhead transmission line, planning for the construction of transmission towers must be equipped with reliable protection and isolation equipment. However, the reliability of protection and isolation systems often exceeds the standard provisions regarding overvoltage and isolation coordination. In areas with a high density of lightning strikes, there is a discrepancy between the design and the concept of isolation, which can be seen from the excessive number of insulators on the transmission tower, the choice of class of lightning arrester is too high, the distance between the equipment and the distance between the lightning arrester equipment is too far. This is what causes the transmission system that has been built not in accordance with the isolation coordination concept, so it needs to be re-evaluated in order to get a reliable and efficient protection system, and recommend improvements to the lightning protection and grounding system in the transmission line.
